The voice of European police officers resonated strongly in the heart of European democracy. The delegation, represented through the structures of the European Police Union (EPU), participated in the Annual Meeting of the Intergroup on Police within the European Parliament.
The success of this presence was prepared a day in advance, when the EPU attended a strategic meeting bringing together Europe’s most important trade union organizations. In an unprecedented show of solidarity, union leaders established a common and united approach to convince MEPs of the need for radical legislative measures. The primary objective of this united front is the European-level legislation of assault on police officers as a "Eurocrime," alongside other vital goals aimed at ensuring the protection and dignity of the police profession through a unified Union-wide formula.
During the Intergroup meeting, the Vice-President of EPU, Nicolae Cîrlan, took the floor to present the structural issues of public order systems, while also supporting Petition no. 1407/23 initiated by Spanish partners from the Confederación Española de Policía (CEP).
His message was a direct wake-up call to political decision-makers:
"Sometimes, politicians forget that police officers go into places and situations that everyone else runs away from as fast as they can! It is our duty to be where the danger is, but it is your duty to provide us with a legal and social shield. Let us not forget that bad people and crime grow because good people allow it—and we can no longer allow legislative indifference to weaken the state uniform!" Nicolae Cîrlan pointed out.
The event reaffirmed that Europe’s security cannot be guaranteed if those on the front line are left prey to violence and lack of resources. Through today's actions, the EPU has demonstrated that the fight for police rights knows no borders. The unity displayed in Brussels is the first step toward European legislation that severely punishes any attack on law enforcement and recognizes the high-risk status of this noble profession.
